Honestly, this is a reality check that engineers worldwide are facing right now. It’s especially brutal for fresh grads entering the market this year. The old playbook for breaking into tech—the one people relied on for decades—just doesn’t work anymore. It used to be that if you could write basic code logic, you could land a junior role. Today, AI has basically taken over that low-level “translation” work.

Whenever I start teaching someone Linux, the conversation inevitably turns to choosing a distribution. Is RedHat better? Or Ubuntu? Most beginners only think of these two options at first.

In reality, there are roughly 300 active distributions in the Linux ecosystem. This number is hard to pin down precisely because the Linux Kernel is released under a free and open-source license—the GNU General Public License—and most accompanying software follows suit. Consequently, anyone with the technical know-how can take this foundation, tailor it to their specific needs (such as desktop use or supporting legacy/modern hardware), package it up, and redistribute it.

Desktop System	Features & Description
GNOME	Currently the most mainstream desktop environment. Modern and clean interface with a unique operation logic (with a hint of macOS). It is the default desktop for distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora, and Debian.
KDE Plasma	Focuses on extreme customization freedom and gorgeous visual effects. The default interface is close to Windows operation logic. Excellent performance optimization in recent years, combining aesthetics with relative lightweightness.
XFCE	A veteran lightweight desktop environment. Focuses on extreme simplicity, stability, and resource efficiency. Highly suitable for older computers or users seeking high performance.
Cinnamon	Developed by the Linux Mint team. The interface logic is very friendly to Windows users, with an extremely low learning curve. It balances aesthetics and performance.
MATE	Continues the classic operation experience of traditional GNOME 2. The interface is traditional, lightweight, and stable.
LXQt / LXDE	Extremely lightweight desktop environments, specially built for old hardware and resource-constrained devices (like early Raspberry Pis).
Budgie	Initially developed by the Solus project. The interface is clean and elegant, combining a modern feel with traditional desktop operation logic.
Deepin (DDE)	Focuses on extremely gorgeous UI design and transition animations. The visual effects are very eye-catching.
Pantheon	The default desktop for elementary OS. The design language heavily pays homage to macOS, emphasizing refined out-of-the-box aesthetics.

After working for over a decade and using Linux as my primary operating system for nearly 10 years, honestly, am I qualified to be a Linux evangelist yet? This series marks a new chapter for me, where I plan to share my daily usage habits. As for SysAdmin and operations stuff? I won’t be sharing too much of that, mainly because there are already so many people out there who write about it way better than I do. For that part, it’s probably best if I just stick to sharing my own notes.
